Climate change and deforestation had caused 15 springs to dry up in Kavre district, creating severe water scarcity for 8 villages. In 2020, Green Foundation Nepal initiated an integrated water resource management project. The approach combined scientific spring recharge techniques with traditional water conservation wisdom. Recharge ponds were constructed in catchment areas, degraded land was reforested with native species, and spring protection structures were built. Communities formed water user committees to manage resources sustainably. Within two years, all 15 springs were flowing again. Water availability increased by 300%, agriculture expanded, and women saved 2-3 hours daily previously spent fetching water from distant sources. The success has attracted replication in 12 other villages.
